Shubhaankar Ray

Shubhaankar Ray is an Indian-qualified lawyer with four years of experience in commercial litigation and arbitration.

He started out as an Associate at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM), a Tier 1 law firm in India ranked Band 1 for Dispute Resolution: Arbitration in India by Chambers Global, working across its Dispute Resolution and Emerging Technology & Financial Services Regulatory practices. He helped lead evidence and cross-examine witnesses in both commercial litigation matters (including contentious intellectual property, employment-related and shareholder disputes) before the Delhi High Court, and commercial arbitrations (including banking and financial services, construction and infrastructure, and supply and distribution disputes). He also worked on white-collar investigations and advised clients on enforcement, financial services and technology matters.

He has seen dispute resolution from both the Bar and the Bench. As Judicial Law Clerk to Justice Manmohan, he worked with him both when he was Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and later, after his elevation to Judge of the Supreme Court of India. While clerking at the Supreme Court of India, he was involved in legal research and extensively briefing the Justice on civil and commercial litigation matters on a daily basis. Some of these involved complex questions concerning the intersection of Indian insolvency law and the enforcement of foreign arbitral awards.

Before coming to Geneva, Shubhaankar practised as an Advocate before the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court, handling commercial and civil litigation and arbitration matters. He acted for a listed financial services company in proceedings concerning the challenge and subsequent enforcement of an arbitral award. He also secured a six-month extension of an arbitral tribunal’s mandate for a construction company and represented a development authority in proceedings concerning the defence of an arbitral award before the Supreme Court of India.

A 2022 graduate of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, he has contributed to and published in journals and Thomson Reuters handbooks on third-party funding in international arbitration. He has also written regularly on insolvency and regulatory developments.

Away from work, you’ll usually find him behind a camera, whether for photography or cinematography, or chasing down a good meal in a new city.
