Joost Pauwelyn is Professor of International Law at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, where he is also the Director of the Centre for Trade and Economic Integration (CTEI). He is a member of the Brussels bar and co-founder of the European office of Cassidy Levy Kent, a boutique law firm specialized in international trade and investment, with offices also in Washington DC, and Ottawa. He is the Founding President of TradeLab - external link and Founding Co-Director of the Geneva Trade Platform - external link. He is a member of the ICSID Panel of Conciliators (appointed by Belgium). In 2020, he was appointed to the WTO’s pool of MPIA appeal arbitrators (proposed by the EU).
Joost was previously the Murase Visiting Professor of Law at Georgetown University (2014-2021), a tenured professor at Duke Law School, served as Senior Advisor with King & Spalding and as legal officer at the WTO (1996-2002). From 2015 to 2020, he was Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal of International Economic Law.
Joost received degrees from the Universities of Namur, Leuven, Oxford and Neuchâtel.
