MIDS ALUMNI PORTRAIT SERIES — From Geneva to Hong Kong: Christopher Awodimila on building a global arbitration career

From Geneva to Hong Kong, Christopher Awodimila's MIDS journey has taken him across four jurisdictions and some of the world's leading arbitration practices. Now working at HKIAC, he reflects on the opportunities, friendships, and global alumni network that helped shape his international career.

What motivated you to join the MIDS program, and what were your expectations at the time?

I heard about the MIDS program from a friend of mine. After conducting my research, I found out it was the best specialised master program for international dispute settlement. My expectations were simple. I expected to be trained by globally recognised and leading dispute resolution practitioners and lecturers.

Which aspect of the MIDS experience had the greatest impact on your professional or personal growth?

Easily my remarkable classmates. Everyone in my batch had some exceptional or unique qualities that made it fun and rewarding for me. Due to the MIDS program, I have built and continue maintain professional relationships with my classmates who hail from several parts of the world.

How has the MIDS network or training influenced your career path since graduation?

 The MIDS network and training was very helpful in securing opportunities to work in Europe. For instance, it was through the MIDS-Lalive arbitration internship program that I got my 6 months arbitration trainee contract with Lalive. I also got several other job opportunities due to my MIDS education.

Can you briefly explain your career path since graduating from the MIDS?

Since my time at the MIDS, I have worked in four different foreign jurisdictions, i.e., Switzerland, France, United Kingdom, and now Hong Kong SAR. I have also worked with the arbitration teams of reputable law firms like Three Crowns LLP, Lalive, A&O Shearman, and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan LLP. I have completed the manuscript for a soon to be published book on arbitration. I am currently working with the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC).

Which moment since graduation made you realize the true value of your MIDS experience - and was it what you expected?

The standout value of the MIDS experience international reach of the MIDS Alumni Association due to the international and diverse nature of each cohort. I have always met a MIDS Alumnus at every organisation I worked abroad. It is truly amazing. As a practical experience, my MIDS classmate residing in Hong Kong made my recent move to Hong Kong seamless.

If you had to describe the MIDS journey in one paradox, what would it be?

You must first assume you know nothing to learn everything at the MIDS.
